How can SMEs turn sustainability and digital transformation into practical business opportunities? Through its peer-to-peer learning activities, SustainX is helping businesses exchange experiences, explore innovative solutions and learn from real-world applications across different sectors.
Innovation is not always about developing breakthrough technologies. Often, it begins with identifying everyday business challenges, learning from others and finding smarter, more sustainable ways to operate.
This approach was at the heart of five SustainX peer-to-peer learning sessions, which recorded almost 300 participations and involved 26 SME peers sharing practical experiences and examples of innovation in action.
From circular textile solutions to predictive maintenance and AI-enabled services, the sessions highlighted how companies can combine sustainability, digital technologies and cross-sector collaboration to strengthen their innovation potential.
Three Key Lessons from the SustainX Peer Learning Experience
1. Integrating Circularity into Business Models
Circular innovation goes beyond reducing waste. Examples involving textile reuse and sustainable materials demonstrated how SMEs can incorporate circular economy principles into their products, services and business strategies.
A key lesson was that successful circular solutions need to balance environmental benefits with customer expectations and business viability from the very beginning.
2. Turning Data into Practical Business Value
Digital transformation offers significant opportunities for SMEs, particularly through technologies such as artificial intelligence and predictive maintenance.
However, the experiences shared during the sessions highlighted that adopting advanced technologies requires more than access to digital tools. Reliable data, well-defined processes and clear business needs are essential foundations for developing effective digital solutions.
3. Accelerating Innovation Through Collaboration
Collaboration emerged as a central element of successful innovation.
Examples related to Digital Product Passports, innovative tourism services and digital customer experiences demonstrated the importance of bringing together complementary expertise, testing solutions at an early stage and incorporating feedback from users and partners.
For SMEs, exchanging knowledge across sectors and regions can help identify new opportunities and overcome common implementation challenges.
From Shared Experiences to Interregional Innovation
The SustainX peer-to-peer learning activities demonstrate the value of practical knowledge exchange in supporting SME innovation.
By sharing not only successful approaches but also challenges and lessons learned, participating businesses contributed to a learning environment where innovative ideas can be explored, adapted and potentially replicated in different regional and sectoral contexts.
Through activities such as these, SustainX continues to strengthen interregional cooperation and support SMEs in their transition towards more sustainable, digital and innovation-driven business models.
The experiences gathered underline an important message: meaningful innovation becomes more accessible when businesses have opportunities to connect, learn from one another and translate knowledge into practical action.
